Family violence is the mistreatment of one family member by another, which includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. It is a crime that is widespread in our society and throughout the world. Family violence often goes unreported and family members continue to suffer.

The long-term effects of domestic violence threaten the stability of the family, community, state, and nation. Children witness and learn that violence is an acceptable means of coping with stress, anger, or solving problems. The cycle of family violence must be broken before today’s battered or abused child becomes tomorrow’s batterer and or abuser. If not broken, the cycle of family violence begins and continues throughout many generations.
